The pleasure of keeping chickens has been a homesteaders tradition for centuries, and now you want to join in! The place to start is right here and select your own chicks, see them grow up before your eyes.
This spring season I will have many breeds of chicks available for orders and selections. Mid-summer I will have more varieties available in smaller quantities. I am also offering beginners packages to help people new to chickens start on the right foot. I will also hold workshops for clients looking to share, and learn about raising chickens.
Where do my chicks come from?
My chicks are being sourced from all over! Some from Canada and others from the USA. I will also be hatching out fertile eggs sourced from all over North America, just to cater to the needs of my Southern Ontarian families and clients. All American chicks will be vaccinated, and come from healthy stock. many of my varieties are from show-quality stock.
Will there be a health guarantee?
No, simply put, I will not place an official health guarantee on the chicks once they leave my care. I will not sell lame, sick or injured chicks to you. Only the healthiest birds will be sold. I cannot place a health guarantee, because their well being is all on you once they leave my care. If you do not follow instructions given for transportation and primary care, it will be on you if you suffer loses or injury.
How do I get my chicks?
Place an order with me here. Browse my breeds page and do some research on the breeds and varieties you might like. When you're ready place an order, and I'll let you know when they will be available. Because I am a tiny business, I will not be shipping the chicks. You must come and pick them up in Guelph, ON. I will also be at local Farmer's markets. Arrangements will be made closer to hatch-days.
About my chicks:
Above all else, it is important to me that my chicks are of the best health and quality before my clients receive their orders. I have decided to raise the chicks organically, after pick-up it's up to you to continue that, or switch to commercial grain and feed. It's important to me that these chicks have the best treatment and diet available. A stable and steady diet of organic grain, insects, plants and oyster shell will guarantee the best egg-laying quality in a hen and it starts with the chicks.
The chicks will be on an USDA Organic diet of USDA Meal Worms, Organic Chick Feed, Cert. Organic Cat Grass and dried kelp. |
Sexing and determining breeds in chicks:
If you know your chicken, you will know that sexing chicks can be very challenging. Most of my chicks will be sexed, however there is a slight chance this has failed to work. I will do my best to re-sex the chicks before sale. On another note, some chicks of different breeds look incredibly similar to each other, for example Cuckoo Marans and Barred Rocks look almost identical in the first weeks. I will do my best to give you the correct breeds and sexes with your order. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
